MLK Jr. Day of Service

10:00 AM10:00

MLK Jr. Day of Service

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we invite the Chestnutwold community to participate in a Day of Service dedicated to advancing Dr. King’s mission. The event will be held in the cafeteria from 10-11:30 AM. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Lauren at: chestnutwoldinschoolactivities@gmail.com.

The Chestnutwold PTO will honor Dr. King's legacy with a day of learning, service, and action. We will explore the story of the Little Rock Nine and other young people who fought for civil rights alongside Dr. King, make placemats for Cathedral Kitchen, design posters, collect canned goods for the Ardmore Food Pantry, and write to Harrisburg legislators to advocate for fair funding for public education. We will also hold storytime at 10:30am and 11:00am. Join us in the Chestnutwold cafeteria anytime during the event.

As part of this event, we’ll be collecting canned and non-perishable food items to support the Ardmore Food Pantry, and we encourage families to participate by donating items assigned to their child’s grade level! We hope you’ll join us for a meaningful morning.

Donations may be brought directly to the cafeteria on Monday, January 19th or dropped off in the main lobby from Tuesday, January 20th through the morning of Thursday, January 22nd. The Ardmore Food Pantry has shared their most-needed items, and organizing donations by grade helps us make the biggest impact:

Kindergarten & 1st Grade:
• Hearty soups
• Peanut butter
• Toiletries (full-size shampoo, conditioner, body wash)*

2nd & 3rd Grades:
• Cereal
• Pet food (often helps families avoid rehoming beloved pets)
• Salad dressings, condiments, vegetable oil*

4th & 5th Grades:
• Pasta and sauce
• Tuna
• Coffee
• Diapers (especially sizes 3 and 4)*

* Most needed

Chestnutwold Clothing Exchange Collection

The PTO is collecting gently used Chestnutwold clothing on Monday, January 19th from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM for its upcoming spiritwear exchange.

The Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair Is Coming to Chestnutwold December 1-December 5

Your child will tour the fair during their library time and will have the opportunity to purchase books. Kindergarten classes will also have the opportunity to shop during the school day. There will also be two family nights on Tuesday December 2 and Thursday December 4, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. if you would like to shop with your children.

Please consider volunteering for this event that promotes literacy and supports our teachers and library.

Here are ways you can get ready for the fair and support literacy and STEAM at Chestnutwold:

How to Pay at the Book Fair

  • Cash is always accepted at the Book Fair: Please send cash in an envelope marked with your child’s name and homeroom the week of the book fair.

  • eWallets: If you would like your child to go cashless to the book fair, eWallets are available. Please note that funds placed on eWallets are not refunded if they are not used at the fair, but they can be used for future purchases through your scholastic account.

    • After the Book Fair, unused eWallet funds will convert to an eGift card balance. Families can use eGift cards to shop online in The Scholastic Store, fund an eWallet for a future fair, or contribute to the Book Fairy fund.

    • If you had an eWallet last year, check if you still have funds from last year. If you would like, you can apply them to your new eWallet account for this year.

    • This year, student eWallet balances less than $1.50 may be used to help other students who may be a little short on change for their purchase. If you wish to opt out of this, please email Amanda Camacho (camachoajc@gmail.com) before Monday December 1, 2025.

    • For more information on eWallets, visit https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/chestnutwoldelementaryschool

  • Credit cards are also an option, but only for adults at parent night or during volunteer time.

  • Please note: PA Sales Taxes is an additional charge that is added at time of purchase.

Community Discussion: The Anxious Generation

The Anxious Generation

Join us for an engaging, parent-led discussion on Jonathan Haidt’s groundbreaking book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. Haidt explores how the rise of smartphones and social media has profoundly impacted children’s mental health—and what we can do to reverse course. It’s never too early to start thinking about how you’ll approach social media and smartphone usage with your kids. According to Common Sense Media, approximately 31% of children aged 8–12 use social media. This discussion is relevant whether you have elementary, middle, or high school students.

🔷 No need to read the book! See registration page for links to a <1 hour pre-watch/listen
